FIRST, LOCAL LANGUAGES

English is the official language in Ghana, though there are more than two dozens local languages. In cities, English is widely spoken but in remote areas, people may speak their tribal language only. Twi is the main local language of Ghana. Others are Ga in Accra, Fante towards the west, Ewe towards the Togo border, etc.

Twi words and basic phrases are not difficult to learn but must be pronounced with care. Expatriates who make the efforts to learn Twi words, even a few, will enjoy true surprise and happiness from Ghanaians they share them with. The first of all is a must: thank you is “meda ase”.

Twi classes
Twi is considered as fairly easy to learn so, should you have the will and the time, we advise it as it could make a difference while in Ghana.

In the fall of 2010, Goethe Institut Accra in Cantonments launched Twi courses. The courses focus on communication - in a short time, you can listen to the radio, discuss with Ghanaian colleagues, neighbours and friends. The teacher is Monzero Jameo-Chambas.
There is a Fall semester and a Winter/Spring semester. A "Beginner/Continuation" class will take place if there are enough requests. Classes are either on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays, from 5.30pm to 7pm.
You may eventually join a class that has already started. Do enquire.
Last we checked, the course cost was affordable and for 28 teaching units plus a small registration for new course participants.
Registration opens for a maximum of 18 students per class. Payment to be made cash from 0900 to 1200 and 1300 to 1800 at the registration office. The person's name is Mabel.
Goethe Institut - 0302 776 764 / 779 769 - language@accra.goethe.org.

The husband of Emily Aidoo, one of our Members, is offering Twi language lessons. Mr. George Danso Aidoo is experienced teaching foreign students as well as Ghanaians who are returning to their home country. Lessons can be one-on-one or as a small group. Please call or email for more information: 0246232383 / 0271005961 - danso23@yahoo.com

Mr. Atiglo
is a mature teacher with 29 years experience.
Classes started in October 2010 and were to run every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month from 1 to 3pm.
Venue: Dubois Centre.
Text 0277 522 229 to register.
For anyone wishing to arrange a different date, time or venue for a group of at least 4 persons, please either come to the next class to speak directly with Mr Atiglo, or contact him on his mobile number: 0209 267 479.

We recommend to all a little 50-page red booklet called "Akwaaba Welcome to Ghana - Twi for Tourists". Words are classified by themes such as Greetings, Times and Seasons, Eating out; each including useful info and tips. The last part is about cultural knowledge. The booklet has been written by Nana Koranteng, a Ghanaian development consultant for the a foreign cooperation agency. It is available for only GHS 2.00 at African Market, the goood and large arts & crafts shop in Osu (past Lara Mart supermarket) and at the bookshops of Novotel Hotel downtown and Fiesta Royale in North Dworzulu. We use it as a welcome gift to newcomers using our relocation services so we have a stock and will be happy to give you one if you can't find it at these two locations. Write us at services@accraexpat.com

Children will enjoy "What's That: My First Numbers in Twi and English" - a fully illustrated, bilingual booklet - only in e-book form by now (childen can enjoy before relocating). See the first pages.

ENGLISH CLASSES
Although speaking Twi will give another dimension to your Ghana experience, English remains the language you will widely use as an expatriate.

As the expatriate community is very diversified with people coming from a large number of different countries, including many where English is not the official language, we thought of including English lessons in this page.

We advise the English classes offered by the Alliance Française Accra, the French cultural center. Terms starts in January, April and September/October and lasts 2/3 months. Intensive classes are offered (5 x 4 hours per week) as well as regular classes at four different levels (5 x 2 hours per week). Recommended text books cost GHS 75 each (rates may change).
Details and current rates are available at 05 01 52 42 37 - 0302 773 134 or 760 278 and on their website. You may also write to englishlanguage@afaccra.org.

Ebenezer is a tutor recommended by our Member Iren Chavez and by Maricela Munoz in 2015. His price is extremely generous and his schedule is built around the student to ensure that they benefit the most. He can be reached at ebenezer.koomson@aiesec.net.

FRENCH ANYONE?
Ghana being surrounded by francophone countries, home of many francophones and Accra the base for many regional operations for foreign governments, companies and organizations, mastering some French may be a serious plus in your work (and resume). Should you be an unemployed spouse/partner, you may also wish to use your free time to learn French. See 10 other reasons to learn French.

You can buy manuals on the streets of Accra as shown on the Ghana In France website but, more seriously, you should check the classes offered by Alliance Française Accra and the dates for the next term. Six different programs are usually offered from GHS 85 to GHS 300 per term (rates may change). You also can choose one-on-one classes with a teacher or e-learning if you cannot attend classes in person.
